Creative Process

Creative Director Allyson Brown shares her creative approach to Afro Freedom Afro Feast’s visual brand identity.

During my visit to Dakar Nola restaurant, I had the opportunity to experience Senegalese cuisine and ceremonial traditions. Co-owners Chef Serigne Mbaye and Effie Richardson shared their deep passion for their annual Afro Freedom Afro Feast Juneteenth celebration of bringing heritage and culinary art across the African Diaspora together, which had a significant influence on the development of the creative brand identity. It was important to create an event logo that was clean, dynamic, and strong for a timeless impact and aesthetic.

After conducting research, I discovered that rice is a common ingredient in traditional cuisines across the globe. Incorporating the rice plant icon into the logo not only represents the universal ingredient but also symbolizes growth, unity, and togetherness.

As I studied the history of Juneteenth and its use of the symbolic colors of the Pan-African flag, I curated a color palette with fresh and sophisticated tones and hues. This color palette reflects the elegance and artistry of the chef's cuisine, enhancing and elevating the overall brand identity and event experience.
